Food autonomy in Réunion: a major challenge

In Réunion, despite the often-cited figure of 70% local coverage in fruits and vegetables, the actual rate of overall food autonomy is less than 1%.

This represents in Réunion the proportion of strictly and entirely locally sourced food products consumed on average by families: 80% of consumption is directly imported, and the remainder (nearly 20%) is locally produced with chemical inputs, pesticides, GMO animal feed, pre-treated seeds, and chicks, all imported.

This heavy dependence on imports poses a significant risk of food shortages in the event of supply disruptions and would leave the population unable to meet its essential food needs.

Food autonomy is a major issue for Réunion. It involves ensuring the food security of the population.
